LeapFrog has announced a new programme which will allow external developers to develop software for its educational toys, including the LeapPad2 and LeapsterGS systems.

Software will be sold via LeapFrog's App Center.

The move means that now anyone will be able to make software for the LeapFrog systems, much like how any developer can contribute apps to Apple's app store.LeapFrog will of course screen all contributions to make sure they are child-appropriate.

The new programme will kick-off with a raft of software developed by toy firm Scholastic.

"We are thrilled to make our base of millions of connected platforms available to the vast number of talented independent content developers and gaming studios around the world,"said Greg Ahearn, chief marketing officer at LeapFrog.
